What I do is about as simple as it gets, but I sometimes think conceptual art is more akin to advertising than art. It's trying too hard to sell you something, all that work just to shape your thoughts, it doesn't seem worth it to me. It's over the moment you got it. I want you to be fascinated like I am fascinated. To need to keep looking even though you know what or who it is, and maybe not know why. It's never perfect, the original photograph is for that, but maybe I amplified how it feels, or through my feeling for the photograph something of the man, the photographer and myself has survived and become connected and made available to you. The photograph was taken by Platon. And of being a recognisable face Cumberbatch is quoted as saying "I was around ten years before that and no one took the same face seriously. It's all projection." These are two different images. This is the original and more imperfect than the one above, it looks less like Mr Benedict Cumberbatch but I like it anyway. When it comes to showing work is the criteria accuracy or authenticity, imitation or integrity - cohesion? I don't know. I vary - which is why I nearly always post more than one version of my exercise. For that is what they are. Just to demonstrate my point really. One says Oh yes it's sherlock (the nose is off). The other is like... :pause:  : pause : (maybe its just me). It's defiant. It says I am scribbles and I am staring at you. Really its your own consciousness staring back at itself. Like in cartoons. The other is a moderate drawing of Benedict Cumberbatch drawn late at night after a couple of days going mad not drawing.
